Congratulations to Jennifer M. Holder-Murray, MD, FACS, FASCRS, who has been appointed Surgical Director for the UPMC Center for Perioperative Care, effective November 1st, 2021.
Dr. Holder-Murray is a colorectal surgeon, Associate Professor, and Vice Chair for Quality Integration in our department. In addition, she holds a secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and is Co-Director of the UPMC system-wide Enhanced Recovery Program (also referred to as ERAS). Dr. Holder-Murray earned her MD from the University of Nevada School of Medicine and completed her general surgery residency at University of Chicago Medical Center and a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic. She completed additional advanced training in surgical research and career development with the Association for Academic Surgery and in leadership quality with the American College of Surgeons, as well as the Intermountain mini-Advanced Training Program in Health Care Delivery Improvement.
Dr. Holder-Murray has been active in research, teaching, and mentorship, and serves on many UPMC and hospital committees, including the UPMC Patient Education Governance Committee, and for UPMC Presbyterian/Shadyside, the Quality and Safety Leadership and Steering Committees (as a member and Surgery Cabinet Leader of both), the Medical Executive Committee (member-at-large), and the Perioperative IDFS Work Group. She has received Service Excellence Awards from UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside for her work with ERAS and is a two time recipient of the UPMC ACES Award.
In her new role as Surgical Director for the Center for Perioperative Care, Dr. Holder-Murray will provide physician leadership from the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and the Perioperative Service Line. She will help lead development and promotion of new perioperative models of clinical transformation and oversee the clinical impact of these programs. In collaboration with other leaders, she will lead perioperative outreach strategies and be in open communications between the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine and other surgical/procedural departments to foster cooperation in promoting efficient, cost effective, high quality care.
