Date

December 6, 2022 - 10:00am to 11:30am

Event Description

Dr. Jillian Bonaroti, MD
Title: Proteomic characterization of the response to elective surgery in the context of aging
“Inflammaging” is characterized by a persistent, low-level inflammatory state involving both the innate and cell mediated immune system, as well as cytokine and chemokine networks. This phenomenon occurs both within the tissue microenvironment and systemic circulation and has been linked to numerous age-related disease processes. Aged patients (>65 years old) have increased morbidity and mortality following surgical intervention. However, the age-related differences in the perioperative and post-operative immune responses to major operative stress have not been fully characterized. An update on proteomic data characterizing this response in young and aged patients will be presented in the talk.

Dr. Elizabeth "Libby" Pace, MD

Title: Reducing Antibiotic Use in our Pediatric Patients: An Update

I will be providing some updates regarding several of my ongoing projects concerning antibiotic use in our pediatric surgical patients.  First, I will provide a quick update concerning the NICU Antibiotics and Outcomes or NANO trial, a multi-center RCT concerning empiric antibiotic use in our preterm, low-birthweight infant population. Next, I will discuss our work regarding the proposed Post-operative Antibiotics in Necrotizing Enterocolitis or PAINTER Trial. PAINTER hopes to address the use of prolonged post-operative antibiotic use in our infants who undergo abdominal procedures for surgical NEC. And finally, I will provide some updates concerning antibiotic use in the setting of appendicitis and work with the Eastern Pediatric Surgical Network (EPSN) consortium.
