Title "The cellular immune response to elective surgery: the impact of aging and comparisons to the traumatic injury response"

Aged patients (>65 years old) have increased morbidity and mortality following surgical intervention. However, the age-related differences in the perioperative and post-operative immune responses to major operative stress have not been fully characterized. Furthermore, the response to surgical stress is often used as a surrogate for the traumatic injury response, which may be unfounded.

In this final Simmons presentation, figures for our manuscript in progress describing our single cell RNAseq and proteomic findings in the circulation and bone marrow of young and aged patients undergoing major elective surgery will be presented. We draw conclusions regarding the differential response between young and aged patients and how the response to elective surgery differs from trauma.
